The room’s ceiling experienced collapsed throughout the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, but a picket chest containing a clay plate and a lantern, bearing a bas-reduction sculpture of Zeus turning into an eagle, managed to endure, its lid remaining ajar, presumably as its entrepreneurs fled the doomed city.
