Ptacek Home creates Chunk Line furniture from storm-downed trees

American studio Ptacek Dwelling has created the Chunk Line household furniture collection, which aims to incorporate standard procedures with a “contemporary, sculptural twist,” from trees that ended up downed by storms or felled for protection.


The US-dependent studio, whose collection is shortlisted in the sustainable structure classification for Dezeen Awards 2021, uses salvaged wood from neighborhood forests to create its home furnishings.

“Our forests give up big chunks of wooden alongside highways and in neighborhoods that are not commercially practical on an industrial scale so often close up as firewood or landfill,” the studio explained.

Having advantage of this source of wood, Ptacek Property creates furniture that is both of those created and applied domestically. “I use a modest loader and a portable tree mill together with my woodshop to take the venture from sawlog to a concluded piece by myself,” founder Thomas Ptacek informed Dezeen.

“I then produce to community shoppers so the piece life in a several miles from where the tree was originally grown and salvaged,” he included.

“After a storm, I usually get calls from householders and tree assistance providers asking me if I want the most up-to-date downed tree with the hope of saving it from turning out to be firewood.”

The studio’s Chunk Line assortment features benches manufactured from Norwegian Spruce and a planter made from storm-downed Black Locust, which is ideal for planters as it is very rot-resistant.
